Photo of River Liffey

Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland and home to a quarter of its people, grew up at the mouth of the Liffey River, where the river was fordable and there was access to the sea. The place was called Dubh Linn, "black pool," by the Gaelic natives because of the peat-colored waters of the Liffey. The city is famous for, among other things, the purity of its Georgian architecture.

O'Connell Street is the main artery of Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. It starts at the Charles Stewart Parnell monument, commemorating the great parliamentary leader of the late 1800s, and runs southward to the O'Connell monument, the city's tribute to Daniel O'Connell, the "Liberator" who secured emancipation for the country's Roman Catholic majority in 1829.
